Who is Jesus?

A group of religious leaders once questioned Jesus about his identity and He said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am.” John 8:58

There is much that can be said about this verse and the related passage; however, we will only address two primary words “was” and “am”. These words are quite different. In the original language the first word “was” teaches that Abraham was brought into existence. It clearly teaches he is a created being. On the other hand, the second word “am” clearly declares Christ did not come into existence; rather, He has always existed. He is co-eternal with the Father. He indeed is God the Son and the Son of God. Just as John declared in John 1:1 , “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”

Let no one be mistaken…Jesus, the Christ, is God! He is the resurrection and the life. There is no other name under heaven where by man can be saved. He is not a way to God; He is the way to God! One will never truly know peace, gain a purpose, receive hope or have assurance of eternal life until one confesses with his mouth that Jesus Christ is Lord and believes with his heart that He has been raised from the dead.

It is God’s Plan that we walk in peace with Him. He wants desperately for us to experience the peace that comes from His presence in this life and the life to come. Life can be difficult. It can be filled with extreme challenges. The Good News is God offers help for today, hope for tomorrow and peace along the way. He offers us life and eternal life. However, many people are not experiencing the peace of His presence and they do not have the assurance of eternal life in Heaven. Why?

We have all gone our own way. By nature we are all sinful. Think about it, we have all offended God in one way or another. Our sin has caused a huge separation between us and God. Many have tried to overcome this separation through doing good, giving money, going to church, through baptism and many other avenues. However, these things alone only leave people empty.

God is not impressed by our efforts; nor did He arrange salvation as something we can earn. So how do we find this peace, significance, fulfillment and salvation?

God has provided a remedy for our sin. Jesus! God sent His one and only Son to earth to live a perfect life fulfilling all of the righteous requirements of God’s law. Even though Jesus was tempted in all ways, like you and me, He never sinned. He never offended His Father in Heaven. Because of His perfect life, the God-man, Jesus gave up His life as a sacrifice for our sins. He suffered a cruel death by Roman crucifixion so that you and I could be free from our sins. He paid the ultimate price, the only price, so we can experience the peace of God’s presence and have assurance of eternal life in Heaven. On the third day He was raised to life from the grave indicating that we truly can find life in Him.

Friend, if you do not know the peace of God’s presence….if you do not know where you will spend eternity when you die…please turn to God today and accept the gift of salvation. It is only available through Jesus Christ. He paid the debt. He has made it possible for you to walk in peace with God in this life and the life to come. If you are searching for peace, significance, hope, healing, and most of all eternal life it can only be found in Him and is only a prayer away.

If God is stirring in your heart about accepting Christ as your Savior, please pray the following prayer to Him:

Dear God, Thank you for sending Jesus to this earth to die on a cross just for me. I confess with my mouth that He is Lord and believe in my heart that He was raised from the dead so that I can experience life and have the promise of eternal life. Thank you for saving me. Please help me to live for you and experience the peace of your presence. In Jesus Name, Amen

If you just said this prayer with your mouth and meant it in your heart, you are forgiven! God has cast your sins as far as the East is from the West. How far is that? The next time you see a globe, put your left finger on one side and let it represent East and put your right finger on the other side, representing West. Now that is as far as the two can be from one another. If you move either finger in any direction, in order to be ‘as far as the East is from the West,’ you have to also move the other finger the same direction. See the point? You will never be associated with those sins again. God now sees you as Holy and clean because he does not see your sins, but instead he sees the sinless life of Jesus in you.
